As part if the fulfilment of the requirements of the Radiation Oncology College of the CMSA, each registrar must complete a Masters of Medicine (MMED) during his/her training. As part of their training, registrars enrol in a Research Methodology module with UKZN, which guides them through the theory as well as the process of finalising their research protocol, which is then submitted for ethics approval. In addition to the MMed component of their training, Radiation Oncology registrars attend monthly journal clubs with the aim of enabling critical appraisal of research literature and prepares them to submit a statistical analysis for the research component of their training Portfolio. The department is in the process of increasing its research profile and collaborates with the UKZN’s Gatrointestinal Research Unit, the Multinational Lung Cancer Control Programme (MLCCP), South Africa Breast Cancer and Outcomes study (SABCHO) and has made tentative links with the National Cancer Registry (NCR). Some of the medical officers in the departments are engaged in MMed Sci research related to Oncology.
