Training in the discipline of Radiation Oncology includes being fully versed in the use of chemotherapy, biologicals, endocrine therapy as well as various modalities of radiation to treat malignancies. In addition, much emphasis is also placed on the psycho-social aspects of patient care and palliative interventions. Cancer diagnoses are increasing worldwide and in response to this, research in this field is burgeoning. This exciting discipline at the cutting edge of biomedical research. It incorporates a balanced mix of physics, radiology, pharmacology and clinical medicine, with an emphasis on good patient relationships and holistic care. The Oncology discipline intersects with most surgical and medical disciplines as well as Radiology, Anatomical Pathology and the allied medical disciplines, a multidisciplinary focus to patient management is a strong focus.

There are 2 HPCSA-accreditated training centres affiliated to the University of KwaZulu-Natal – the Oncoology Departments at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Hospital (Durban) and Greys Hospital (Pietermaritzburg). Accreditation was rescinded in Durban in 2017, but the department has recruited several new specialists and is gaining momentum with its training programme. Greys Hospital continues to train registrars and both centres have close ties such that their training is coordinated. Dr Laura Stopforth is currently the Head of Clinical Unit (HCU) at Greys Hospital as well as the acting Academic Head of Radiotherapy and Oncology at UKZN. She is ably assisted by her fellow specialist, Dr Santuri Naicker in training 3 registrars in Pietermaritzburg. The specialist team at IALCH includes Dr Shona Bhadree (HCU), Dr Thandeka Buthelezi-Zulu, Dr Abba Malloum and Dr Nontokozo Gina who oversee the training of 2 registrars there. The number of accredited training posts is set to increase at both facilities.
